RAINWATER HARVESTING

The Site
 

A television personality, whose identity is not published at his/her request, is delighted with the rainwater harvesting system at their new-build home in a quiet village in the Chilterns. The house is on a beautiful wooded plot of about an acre with a large garden sloping down to a meadow framed by a line of beautiful horse chestnut trees.

The Objectives

The GRAF Carat 6500 litre underground tank is installed under a spacious patio at the back of the house and the manhole cover is decked in the same sandstone slabs as the rest of the surface… so you really don’t know it’s there. The leaf filter is in the turret of the tank and discards leafs and debris to the same soakaway as the overflow from the rainwater tank when it’s full. An Enviro submersible pressure sensitive pump provides 4.5 bar of pressure and 3600 litres an hour to the toilets and the taps; turn on and it pumps, turn off and it stops pumping.

The Results

The owner is very pleased to be saving on his water bill (the house’s mains water is metered) and using a natural resource – rainwater – which falls on his own roof. “It gives me quiet satisfaction to be saving and re-using the rainwater, especially as it can be so much better for plants than using mains tap water. I also like the fact that I haven't had to install lots of water butts, which is what I had to do at my last garden!”
