Gravity Feed System – Case Study – Cambridgeshire
Homeowner wanted to reduce reliance on mains water usage.
Client: Homeowner
Type of System: 3000 Litre Gravity Feed System
Location: Cambridgeshire
Completed: 2024
Why Rainwater Harvesting Was Considered
With increasing pressure on traditional water supplies in the local area, a homeowner decided to install a domestic rainwater harvesting system to reduce their reliance on mains water.
After meeting our team at a trade show, the client contacted us to explore a solution that would help them save water while making their home more sustainable. We were able to discuss their property, water usage and long-term water saving goals before recommending the most suitable rainwater harvesting system for their home.
The Rainwater Harvesting Solution
After assessing the property size, expected water usage and the client’s sustainability goals, we specified a 3000L rainwater harvesting tank, complete with a filter, pump and a Rain Director control unit.
The system works by supplying rainwater to a smart header tank first. Only when additional water is required will it be pumped from the main underground tank. This design reduces unnecessary pumping and is therefore a more sustainable alternative to traditional mains top-up rainwater harvesting systems.
Since the installation, the homeowner has been able to use their domestic rainwater harvesting system for:
- Flushing toilets
- Supplying washing machines
- Outdoor tap usage
Using rainwater in the washing machine has also produced an unexpected benefit. The homeowner reported that the quality of the rainwater has improved their clothes washing, resulting in better cleaning performance.
Client Feedback
When asked if they would recommend our rainwater harvesting systems, the client said:
“Absolutely. The support has been excellent throughout the process, with no issues answering any questions from the plumber and electrician, including an additional site visit to repair an issue with the control box.”
Key Achievements
- Reduced consumption on mains water.
- Improved clothes washing.
- Guilt-free flushing.
