National SuDS standards make Rainwater Harvesting compulsory in England

Government standards for sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) now make Rainwater Harvesting compulsory for virtually all developments in England.

Our changing climate and increase in population means our water network is being strained further than ever before.
Many areas now suffer from critical water shortages in drought periods, then are exposed to flooding damage during storms.

The new standards mean every development must provide evidence of why RWH can’t be incorporated.

The standards also make two clear distinctions to encourage adoption;

1. ‘Costs alone’ is not considered a viable reason not to be incorporated.
2. Water butts are now not deemed a reasonable solution. For planning purposes, ‘Rainwater Harvesting’ has now been clearly defined as “for regular daily demand for non potable water”.

A rainwater harvesting system should be designed BS EN 16941.

This ensures the safety of the system and ensures the tank is sized adequately for the occupants.

Also, look for products showing WRAS approval for water safety.
