Case Studies
Gravity Feed System – Case Study – Dorset
Dorset homeowner wanted to help the environment and save mains water during regular drought conditions in the south west.
Domestic Rainwater Harvesting System Case Study – Dorset
Why Rainwater Harvesting Was Considered
The aim of the project was to reduce reliance on mains water, support water conservation and help protect the environment during regular periods of drought in the South West of England.
By using harvested rainwater to flush the toilets, the system significantly reduces the amount of mains water required. A return on investment calculation was carried out by the client based on the expected savings from rainwater harvesting.
Even without allowing for future increases in water prices, the estimated payback period was less than five years. This means the system can provide both environmental benefits and long-term financial savings through reduced water bills.
The Rainwater Harvesting Solution
After assessing the property, expected water usage and the client’s goals, we recommended a 7500L Rainwater Harvesting System with a pump.
This setup provides a reliable and efficient solution for collecting, storing and distributing rainwater throughout the property.
How the System Is Used
Since installation, the homeowner has been able to use their domestic rainwater harvesting system for several purposes, including:
- Watering the garden
- Flushing toilets
- Supplying the washing machine
By using rainwater for these applications, the homeowner has reported to have saved on water costs following the 48.9% average increase in South West Water’s bills between 2024 and 2026.
Client Feedback
When asked whether they would recommend our rainwater harvesting systems, the client said:
“Certainly would recommend. Richard has been particularly helpful in trying to resolve some connectivity problems between the level sensor in the tank and the rainwater harvesting control unit. Our highly insulated new build house acts like a giant faraday cage so some extra wiring has been necessary. The service from Rainwater Harvesting has been excellent..”
Key Achievements
- Reduced consumption on mains water.
- Reduced water bills.
- Guilt-free flushing and washing
- Available water in the event of a hosepipe ban.
