Rain Backup in a Box® – the plug-and-play mains water backup for rainwater harvesting systems. When the rainwater runs out this simple controller will top up your tank to a minimum level with mains water – safely and economically. Another eco-innovation manufactured by Rainwater Harvesting Limited
Rain Backup in a Box® – the plug-and-play mains water backup for rainwater harvesting systems.
Rainwater harvesting plays a large role in reducing the dependence of any building on expensive treated water from the mains. Toilet flushing, clothes washing and any outdoor use of water can be assured by rainwater.
In most cases the total mains use of the building can be cut in half.
This system guarantees water will be available to appliances in times of drought when the Rainwater tank is empty. The system uses a level sensor inside the tank to open a solenoid valve within the control unit when water reaches a critical level.
When the tank level triggers the level sensor, the PCB board allows 45 minutes of mains water restricted to 4 litres per minute (180 litres) to enter the tank once the float switch has reached the full position.
U.K. Building Regulations require that rainwater cannot possibly flow back into the mains water supply.
For this reason all mains backup devices must have an air gap where the mains water flows into the rainwater tank. The air gap in this system is an anti-splash tundish and overflow incorporated into one. The transparent clear moulded part. The level sensor is provided with 20 metres of cable and uses a push connection under the right hand panel.
The Rain Backup in a Box® should be fitted inside the building where the occupiers can (when rainwater has run out) hear any mains water running from the solenoid valve. Wall mounting is with screws through holes in the back of the control unit.

Limitation on Use:
Note that the Rain Backup in a Box® is intended for domestic and light garden use. If you run two garden taps with a high power pump (like the HydroForce, Steel Pumps or Divertron pumps) then the outflow of water is higher than the inflow from the backup device.
When the underground storage tank is empty the pump will have no water and its dry-run-protection will turn it off. Some pumps need resetting at the main in this case which is a bore.
Most users get round this issue by having mains water taps available alongside the rainwater outlet so that they can switch to mains for garden use when the underground tank is empty.
The Rain Backup in a Box® will continue to keep up with demand in the house for toilets and washing machine.
If you are planning to use the Backup in a Box with our Shallow Dig F-Line tank with Rain Vantage Filter then the RWH-BUB03 is the product you need. This comes with a special D bracket that houses the level sensor and simply clips onto the D profile of the Rain Vantage Filter.
If you are using the Back in a Box with any other underground or above ground tank then you will require the RWH-BUB03-R. This comes with a 110mm pipe clip that houses the level sensor. This clip is then fixed to a 110mm pipe in the tank.
